What is a fitness desert and why is it important to know where they are?
Go ahead and search for “fitness” or “gym” in any major metropolitan area. You will see possibly hundreds of listings appear, but there will be areas of empty space. These are the areas where major box chains and local fitness operators have not opened fitness facilities.
Unfortunately, often these deserts are in areas where primarily people of color, and more specifically, Black people live. How can African Americans and other people of color stay in shape if they aren’t even being served by the health community?
Typically, the tens of millions of people who visit gyms drive less than five miles to get to their preferred fitness facility. But what happens when the community you live in has no fitness? What do you do then?
